The PCReaders are Lexie from Poisoned Rationality, Jessica from Novel Reaction, Jackie from Literary Escapism and Terry from Romance in the Backseat. Each week, one of us will be your host as we explore the Historical, Young Adult, Contemporary Fiction and the Urban Fantasy genres.

Do you have a novel that would fit into either of the four genres mentioned above? Would you like it to be featured as a Pajama Chat Reader Pick? Send a request to pajamachatreaders AT gmail DOT com.

ShadowfeverI would love to thank everyone who came out last night and discussed Karen Marie Moning’s Shadowfever with Larissa from Larissa’s Bookish Life, Angela from Dark Faerie Tales and I.  For those who missed the discussion, you can listen to it here:

The Shadowfever discussion was a lot of fun and I can’t wait until Larissa’s and our next discussion.  Terry is going to have the next PCR chat, but you’ll have to come back in a day or so to find out which novel will be in the hot seat next.

As for Larissa and I, we’ll be talking about the Night Huntress series by Jeaniene Frost on February 25th as part of the Bookish Escape feature on our blogs.  The next Cat/Bones novel, This Side of the Grave, comes out on the 22nd, so there’ll be a lot to talk about.  Plus, Jeaniene Frost might be popping in on the call as well.

Our next PCR Chat will feature one of the  most controversial series out there – Anita Blake by Laurell K Hamilton.  Join us on March 5th at 9pm EST as Larissa and I go against Katiebabs (Babbling About Books) and Danielle (Alpha Reader) as we discussion the series from Guilty Pleasures to Bullet.

Guilty PleasuresMy name is Anita Blake. Vampires call me “The Executioner”. What I call them isn’t repeatable.

Ever since the Supreme Court granted the undead equal rights, most people think vampires are just ordinary folks with fangs. I know better. I’ve seen their victims. I carry the scars…

But now a serial killer is murdering vampires—and the most powerful bloodsucker in town wants me to find the killer…

In a world where vampires, zombies and werewolves have been declared legal citizens of the United States, Anita Blake is an “animator” – a profession that involves raising the dead for mourning relatives. But Anita is also known as a fearsome hunter of criminal vampires, and she’s often employed to investigate cases that are far too much for conventional police. But as Anita gains the attention of the vampire masters of her hometown of St Louis, she also risks revealing an intriguing secret about herself – the source of her unusual strength and power.

ShadowfeverDue to some technical difficulties, the Shadowfever discussion last night didn’t happen. However, the bugs have been worked out and the discussion is now going to happen on Thursday, February 10th at 9pm EST.

The second Pajama Chat Readers discussion is going to feature Karen Marie Moning’s Shadowfever, which was released on January 18th. This series has been a fantastic ride with each novel ending in cliffhangers, making all of us eagerly awaiting the next one. Now that the series is ended, Larissa from Larissa’s Bookish Life, Angela from Dark Faerie Tales and I want to know your reactions. Did Barron’s secret surprise you? Are you happy with the way it ended? Was there something from the previous books that you just have to talk about?

Please join the three of us Thursday at 9pm EST at Talk Shoe Radio and let’s discuss it.

Warning: We will be focusing on the final novel of the series, so spoilers are going to happen. If you haven’t read Shadowfever yet, then go get a copy and read it. It’s fabulous!

Evil is a completely different creature, Mac. Evil is bad that believes it’s good.

MacKayla Lane was just a child when she and her sister, Alina, were given up for adoption and banished from Ireland forever.

Twenty years later, Alina is dead and Mac has returned to the country that expelled them to hunt her sister’s murderer. But after discovering that she descends from a bloodline both gifted and cursed, Mac is plunged into a secret history: an ancient conflict between humans and immortals who have lived concealed among us for thousands of years.

What follows is a shocking chain of events with devastating consequences, and now Mac struggles to cope with grief while continuing her mission to acquire and control the Sinsar Dubh—a book of dark, forbidden magic scribed by the mythical Unseelie King, containing the power to create and destroy worlds.

In an epic battle between humans and Fae, the hunter becomes the hunted when the Sinsar Dubh turns on Mac and begins mowing a deadly path through those she loves.
Who can she turn to? Who can she trust? Who is the woman haunting her dreams? More important, who is Mac herself and what is the destiny she glimpses in the black and crimson designs of an ancient tarot card?

From the luxury of the Lord Master’s penthouse to the sordid depths of an Unseelie nightclub, from the erotic bed of her lover to the terrifying bed of the Unseelie King, Mac’s journey will force her to face the truth of her exile, and to make a choice that will either save the world . . . or destroy it.

Haven’t read the series yet? What are you waiting for?!  Here are the books, in order:

Darkfever

MacKayla Lane’s life is good. She has great friends, a decent job, and a car that breaks down only every other week or so. In other words, she’s your perfectly ordinary twenty-first-century woman. Or so she thinks…until something extraordinary happens.

When her sister is murdered, leaving a single clue to her death–a cryptic message on Mac’s cell phone–Mac journeys to Ireland in search of answers. The quest to find her sister’s killer draws her into a shadowy realm where nothing is as it seems, where good and evil wear the same treacherously seductive mask. She is soon faced with an even greater challenge: staying alive long enough to learn how to handle a power she had no idea she possessed–a gift that allows her to see beyond the world of man, into the dangerous realm of the Fae….

As Mac delves deeper into the mystery of her sister’s death, her every move is shadowed by the dark, mysterious Jericho, a man with no past and only mockery for a future. As she begins to close in on the truth, the ruthless Vlane–an alpha Fae who makes sex an addiction for human women–closes in on her. And as the boundary between worlds begins to crumble, Mac’s true mission becomes clear: find the elusive Sinsar Dubh before someone else claims the all-powerful Dark Book–because whoever gets to it first holds nothing less than complete control of the very fabric of both worlds in their hands….

Bloodfever

I used to be your average, everyday girl but all that changed one night in Dublin when I saw my first Fae, and got dragged into a world of deadly immortals and ancient secrets. . . .

In her fight to stay alive, MacKayla must find the Sinsar Dubh—a million-year-old book of the blackest magic imaginable, which holds the key to power over the worlds of both the Fae and Man. Pursued by assassins, surrounded by mysterious figures she knows she can’t trust, Mac finds herself torn between two deadly and powerful men: V’lane, the immortal Fae Prince, and Jericho Barrons, a man as irresistible as he is dangerous.

For centuries the shadowy realm of the Fae has coexisted with that of humans. Now the walls between the two are coming down, and Mac is the only thing that stands between them.

Faefever

He calls me his Queen of the Night. I’d die for him. I’d kill for him, too.

When MacKayla Lane receives a page torn from her dead sister’s journal, she is stunned by Alina’s desperate words. And now MacKayla knows that her sister’s killer is close. But evil is closer. And suddenly the sidhe-seer is on the hunt: For answers. For revenge. And for an ancient book of dark magic so evil that it corrupts anyone who touches it.

Mac’s quest for the Sinsar Dubh takes her into the mean, shapeshifting streets of Dublin, with a suspicious cop on her tail. Forced into a dangerous triangle of alliance with V’lane, a lethal Fae prince, and Jericho Barrons, a man of deadly secrets, Mac is soon locked in a battle for her body, mind, and soul.

Dreamfever

They may have stolen my past, but I’ll never let them take my future.

When the walls between Man and Fae come crashing down, freeing the insatiable, immortal Unseelie from their icy prison, MacKayla Lane is caught in a deadly trap. Captured by the Fae Lord Master, she is left with no memory of who or what she is: the only sidhe-seer alive who can track the Sinsar Dubh, a book of arcane black magic that holds the key to controlling both worlds.

Clawing her way back from oblivion is only the first step Mac must take down a perilous path, from the battle-filled streets of Dublin to the treacherous politics of an ancient, secret sect, through the tangled lies of men who claim to be her allies into the illusory world of the Fae themselves, where nothing is as it seems—and Mac is forced to face a soul-shattering truth.

Who do you trust when you can’t even trust yourself?

Sorry for the late notice everyone, due to unexpected illness we are moving the chat to tomorrow, Sunday January 15th at 7:00 EST.  Join us here!

Hunter Wild is the last in a long line of vampire hunters, with the new alliance formed between the vampires and the Helios-Ra (the elite vampire hunter organization) Hunter finds herself having to change her ideas about vampires especially after she meets sexy vampire Quinn Drake. Out for Blood by Alyxandra Harvey continues the Drake siblings stories with Quinn, one of the twins. The first time Hunter met Quinn he called her “Buffy” and then flirted with every young female vampire at the coronation, but as things start to get weird at the school for vampire hunters, Hunter finds herself relying on Quinn for his help in unraveling exactly what is going on.

Quinn has always been a bit of a flirt but there is something about Hunter that draws him like no other female ever has.  When Hunter’s school is attacked by the feral Hel-Blar and then students start getting mysteriously ill, Quinn starts to fear that Hunter’s life may be in danger and he starts to realize how much he cares for the independent sexy Hunter.  But as things heat up and tensions rise Quinn starts to fear he may not be able to protect Hunter from the one thing he should, himself.

Out for Blood by Alxyandra Harvey is a great read! I fell in love with the Drake Chronicles because of the witty and sparkling dialogue between the main characters and Out for Blood continues  with  witty wordplay between Hunter and Quinn.  The tension and mystery add to the story and Hunter’s vulnerability after she does what she needs to make her a fabulous heroine. I personally get tired of stupid whinny women who wait  around for the vampire to save them, Hunter is definitely not that as she works hard to continue her vampire hunting family tradition.  A fourth book is scheduled to be released in November 2011 and Harvey left us hanging, I eagerly await the fourth book to find out more regarding what is happening to Solange. It was wonderful to see more of the characters from Hearts at Stake as Lucy and Nicholas are two of my favorite characters from the series, but I have to admit that Hunter and Quinn are a close second.  I read the book in one sitting and couldn’t put it down. If you enjoyed Hearts at Stake you will love Out for Blood!

The Pajama Chat Readers are excited to have their first YA (young adult) discussion at the new site! We will be discussing the third book in the Alyxandra Harvey Drake Chronicles series, Out for Blood. The Pajama Chat Readers have already discussed the first two books in the series and the same great people will be discussing this third book, Jessica from Novel Reaction, Terry Kate from Romance In the Backseat and Trini.

When we discussed Blood Feud Alyxandra Harvey showed up in the online chat room and gave us some hints as to what to expect in the upcoming books. So make sure you listen to Hearts at Stake here and Blood Feud here, get all caught up so you can join the discussion on January 15th at 10:00 EST.

Hearts at Stake

Watch out, Buffy! A reluctant vampire princess takes on all comers in an action-packed, romantic, and snarky addition to this red-hot genre.

On Solange’s sixteenth birthday, she is going to wake up dead. As if that’s not bad enough, she also has to outwit her seven overprotective older brothers, avoid the politics involved with being the only daughter born to an ancient vampire dynasty, and elude Kieran Black-agent of an anti-vampire league who is searching for his father’s killer and is intent on staking Solange and her entire family.

Blood Feud

The action and romance continue as the Drakes face a new vampire with a 200-year-old grudge.

It’s been centuries since Isabeau St. Croix barely survived the French Revolution. Now she’s made her way back to the living and she must face the ultimate test by confronting the evil British lord who left her for dead the day she turned into a vampire. That’s if she can control her affection for Logan Drake, a vampire whose bite is as sweet as the revenge she seeks.
The clans are gathering for Helena’s royal coronation as the next vampire queen, and new alliances are beginning to form now that the old rifts of Lady Natasha’s reign have started to heal. But with a new common enemy, Leander Montmarte-a vicious leader who hopes to force Solange to marry him and usurp the power of the throne for himself-the clans must stand together to preserve the peace he threatens to destroy.

This second adventure in the Drake Chronicles-told from both Logan’s and Isabeau’s perspectives-has all the same butt-kicking action, heart-pounding romances and snarky humor that readers loved in Hearts at Stake, as well as exciting new revelations about the vampire dynasties to keep readers coming back for more.

Out for Blood

Hunter Wild is the youngest in a long line of elite vampire hunters, a legacy that is both a blessing and a curse at the secret Helios-Ra Academy, where she excels at just about everything. Thanks to her friendship with Kieran Black, Hunter receives a special invitation to attend the coronation of Helena Drake, and for the first time, she sees the difference between vampires that must be hunted and vampires that can become friends-or even more. When students at the academy fall victim to a mysterious illness, Hunter suspects they are under attack from within. She will need someone she can trust to help her save the future of Helios-Ra . . . help that shockingly comes in the form of Quinn Drake, a drop-dead gorgeous vampire. Who said senior year would be easy?

I would love to thank everyone who came out last night and discussed Kim Harrison’s Hollows series with Larissa (Larissa’s Bookish Life), Tricia (Wicked Enchantment) and I.  This was my first time hosting a Talk Radio thing and I thought it went fantastic. I’m so excited about doing the next one that I don’t know if I’ll be able to wait a whole month before doing it again.  Alas…Jessica, Lexie and Terry want to have just as much fun (are you ready for Out for Blood by Alyxandra Harvey on the 15th?), so I’ll have to wait until February 5th for my next turn.

Speaking of which, want to know which novel we’ll be dissecting then?  Shadowfever by Karen Marie Moning comes out on January 18th and it is the final novel in the Fever series.  This series has made it a crime of ending each novel with cliffhangers and I know countless people are just biting their nails until it comes out.  So on February 5th, let’s discuss it.

Welcome to the Pajama Chat Readers first Urban Fantasy discussion.  In February, Kim Harrison will be releasing the eight Hollows/Rachel Morgan novel, Pale Demon, and to get everyone ready for it, Larissa from Larissa’s Bookish Life and I want to rehash what has happened so far.  Was there something from Dead Witch Walking that you just have to get off your chest?  What about the events of A Fistful of Charms?  I know you have something you want to get off your chest, so join us tonight at 9pm EST on Blog Talk Radio and let’s talk about it.

The Call-in Number for tonight is: 347.857.3144.

Pale DemonTo tempt you with the next novel in the Hollows series, Jackie gives an early review of Pale Demon.

___________________________________________

I’m conflicted. I was able to snag a copy of Pale Demon, the new Hollows book by Kim Harrison, and it was probably the wrong thing to do. It doesn’t come out until February 22nd and now I have to wait fourteen months for the next novel and I want it now. What can I say, Pale Demon was freaking fabulous.

Condemned to death for black magic and shunned, Rachel Morgan has three days to somehow get to the annual witches convention in San Francisco and clear her name. If she fails, the only way she can escape death is to live in the demonic ever after . . . for ever after.

Banned from the flight lists, Rachel teams up with elven tycoon Trent Kalamack, headed for the West Coast for her own mysterious business. But Rachel isn’t the only passanger along for the ride. Can a witch, an elf, a living vampire, and a pixy in one car survive for over 2,300 miles? And that’s not counting the assassin on their tail.

A fearsome demon walks the sunlight, freed after centuries of torment to slay the innocent and devour souls. But his ultimate prey is Rachel Morgan. While the powerful witch with nerves of steel will do whatever it takes to stay alive, even embracing her own demonic nature may not be enough to save her.

This is the other bad part, there is so much I want to say, but I know I can’t. There is just so much fabulousness going on that you have to read it for yourself. Seriously. There are two events that occur that I’ve been dying for and they finally happen. I want to say I mentioned a little of it in my review for Black Magic Sanction, so if you want to find out, you can read that; but the whole novel is like Merry Christmas!. Everything you want to see happen will happen in Pale Demon. Well, not everything. I will tell you this – Nick doesn’t make an appearance and this fact tells me there are more books in the series.

Seriously, I was actually getting concerned that Pale Demon could be the end of the Hollows. Harrison is tying up some loose ends and it really gave me that feeling for a bit. However, I’m pretty sure it’s not because there are quite a few things that are left behind that I want to know about. But let’s talk about what I can say.

Yes, Rachel has to get to San Francisco within three days by car. Do you really think the Coven wants her in San Francisco for the convention? If she doesn’t make it, they don’t have to deal with her and back to Alcatraz she can go. So they are doing their damnest to make sure she doesn’t have an easy trip. This actually works in her favor since Vivian has to get back to San Francisco as well and guess who else is driving.

Why is Trent going along for the ride? The reason is something I didn’t see coming and it’s going to have a major impact on his future. This is one twist I am so curious to see more of. Especially considering the fact that it’s going to influence Rachel’s future dealings with Trent as well. That’s all I’m going to say. Trust me, you’ll be shocked to see the reason behind Trent’s reason for tagging along to the west coast.

It’s not a Hollows book without some hijinks going on and for once, Rachel isn’t at the center of them. She’s in the middle of them, yes, but she’s not the reason for them and this really works well for the plotline. The whole reason Trent is going with Rachel is because Quen can’t go with him – and that should say a lot. I can’t remember if it’s a known fact in BMS, but I think it is – Ceri is due to drop the first elven baby any day and Quen needs to stay with her, but Trent has to go. So they rope Rachel into being his babysitter and after this road trip, I can now see why Quen is always along for the ride. Let me tell you this, we see a whole new side to Trent Kalamack, right along with Rachel, and it’s quite amusing. If it wasn’t for Trent, over half the obstacles they encounter on the road trip would be gone. No, that’s wrong, all of the obstacles, minus one and Rachel’s travel arrangements, would be gone. Yes, if you’re a Trent fan, then you’re going to love Pale Demon. He is a major player this time around and nothing goes on without him having a hand in it. Even with the Coven.

The one obstacle that doesn’t involve Trent, and actually involves Jenks, is where we find the villain for Pale Demon. I’m not going to tell you who the villain is or what kind of beef he has with Rachel, because that would be a spoiler. So deal with it. *grin* However, I will tell you this – I am not surprised that he’s there. That Rachel is facing this particular individual, and I can tell you he’s completely new to the series, it makes sense that he would have a presence.

I really don’t want to say too much more for fear of giving something away, but Pale Demon is going to have readers talking about it for months. The plot is full of little things that affect Rachel in such ways that everything is going to change for her. Everyone’s life is going to be different after Pale Demon, and what Rachel ends up going though, and I have no clue what is going to happen next. Like I said earlier, there are so many loose ends that have been tied up that the Hollows series could go anywhere after this. Yes, there have been some over-arcing storylines that are tied up, but there is definitely a new story arc in the works. The changes are going to make a huge impact on Rachel and I totally cannot wait to see what happens to her, Ivy, Jenks and even Trent. Especially Trent. With the way Pale Demon ended, I totally want it now. Seriously…argh! I want to say something but I can’t because it is totally a spoiler and god have I been waiting for it. I saw it coming, and now that it’s here, I want to see more now. I want to see how it will play out. The next fourteen months are going to be agony, I just know it.

Changes – that is what Pale Demon is about and I cannot wait to see how these changes affect Rachel and her friends. Even though I finished it just an hour ago, I keep going back to it and re-reading different passages. Pale Demon is going to stay in my mind for awhile and it’s going to kill me until we can actually talk about it.

Overall, Pale Demon is amazing. There’s no other way to describe it – it’s simply amazing with the way everything flows together. There’s never a dull moment and Rachel handles herself perfectly. She still shows a little of the naiveté we know she has, but it’s not a destructive naiveté anymore. When Pale Demon hits the shelves on February 22nd, make sure you are at your bookstore of choice and you have the next four hours free because you will not be able to put it down. Pale Demon will suck you in and not let you go until you are begging for more. This I will guarantee you.
